Birdsnest

Going, Going… track nine – all the tracks are named after places in the USA. 114 miles further South and we’re into Virginia country. ‘Birdsnest’ is about optimism and someone going out on a limb and trying a new life even with the fear that it may not work. It has so many layers to it. There are angstsy verses, poppy choruses and am ambiguous slide-y coda to end it all.

DLG told Clash Magazine, We had a really great time recording ‘Birdsnest’ at La Fabrique studios in France. It’s kind of typical of the whole album, in a way, in that it’s a song that’s full of weird ideas that often spin off on odd tangents. The main body is quite rocky, with a massive bass sound, but it kind of strangely changes key into a poppy chorus! And then the outro section harks back to the ‘jangly’ Wedding Present sound of the 80s before the final bit, which is much more subdued and gives me the chance to get my old guitar slide out! There’s enough ideas on it for a whole E.P.! I think the recording has quite a ‘positive’ sound, to match the optimism of the lyrics.

Lyrics:

So here’s another story…a man walks into a bar
It’s terrifying because he’s trying something different and he hasn’t got very far
So he buys another merlot and then doesn’t feel quite so bad
It’s like he’s finally stopped doubting his decision to give up everything he had

Because he knows this is nothing to be afraid of; because he choose this adventure for himself
And something good is just about to happen
He can feel it; a sea change in the air
And if he falls short, it doesn’t really matter because quite frankly, tonight he doesn’t care

So he puts away his mobile; he won’t be calling her again
In fact it’s like the past just never happened and it’s kind of strange but then…

But then he knows this is nothing to be afraid of; because he choose this adventure for himself
And something good is just about to happen
He can feel it; a sea change in the air
And if he falls short, it doesn’t really matter because quite frankly, tonight he doesn’t care
